First East Timor CarmelitesNewly ordained Carmelite Fathers Angelino Dos Santos and Martinho Da Costa became the first East Timorese Carmelites to have done their entire Carmelite formation and preparation for priesthood after East Timor became part of the Carmelites’ Australian Province in 2001.

Fr Angelino and Fr Martinho are also the first to finish their Carmelite formation and ministerial training in Australia. For the last four years they have been studying at ACU Melbourne, Yarra Theological Union, Box Hill and Melbourne University of Divinity. They were ordained deacons by Archbishop Denis Hart on 30 November 2013 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middle Park (Vic).

They were ordained on 30 August in St Paul's Church, Los Palos, East Timor by Bishop Basilio do Nascimento Martins. Around 5,000 people witnessed the ceremony, including four Carmelites from Australia: Fr Denis Andrew (Prior Provincial), Fr Bruce Clark (Regional Prior), Fr Wayne Stanhope (Director of Formation) and Fr James Des Lauriers (Prior of Middle Park Community).

Angelino and Martinho arrived at the ceremony on horseback wearing the traditional dress of their villages. Village elders were also among those who attended the ceremony which lasted for three hours. At the end of the Mass Angelino and Martinho gave their first blessing to many of the people before a huge feast.

Angelino celebrated his Mass of Thanksgiving the next day and Martinho celebrated his Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday 6 September 2014.
