Historic Lay Carmelite AssemblyThe 2016 Lay Carmelite Assembly at Jamberoo Abbey NSW was an historic event.

For the first time, the Assembly elected 2 members of the Lay Carmelite Council. Formerly, these representatives were appointed by the Friars’ Provincial Council. So the 2016 Assembly saw the Lay Carmelites of Australia – and New Zealand - achieve a new degree of autonomy. Never before has there been a New Zealand presence on the governing body.

The election -along with Angela Zakarias of Adelaide - of Gwenda Gopperth, Prior of the fledgling community of Palmerston North, means the former Australian National Council of Lay Carmelites is now an international body, and the need that implies for a change of name  provoked what was perhaps the Assembly’s liveliest session.
