Sr Berneice Loch rsm150 2015The establishment of a cross-party/interfaith taskforce, facilitated by CRA, is a wonderful outcome of the recent Canberra meeting between religious leaders and Parliamentarians, writes CRA President Sister Berneice Loch rsm, as she also thanks all those who made this meeting possible.

It was wonderful to see so many of you attending and participating in the meeting with Members and Senators last week at Parliament House in Canberra. While obviously we would have liked to have had the leaders of the major parties present, the fact that approximately 20 Members and Senators attended, in what was a very busy Parliamentary sitting week, meant that it was an extremely worthwhile exercise.

As is outlined in the article in this edition of Pathways, the establishment of a cross-party/interfaith taskforce, facilitated by CRA, is a wonderful outcome and hopefully it will be the platform to change the hearts and minds of even more of our decision makers.

Thank you to everyone who made the day such a great success, in particular our gratitude to Sharon Price rsm, Anne Lane pbvm, Jan Barrett rsj, Libby Rogerson ibvm and Margaret Hinchey rsm, who ensured this aspect of the resolution from the June conference was able to become a reality. Thank you also to our parliamentary hosts - Russell Broadbent MP, Anna Burke MP, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Cathy McGowan MP- their demonstrated ability to put politics aside and work together on this issue is particularly heartening. Our appreciation and thanks to Paul Bongiorno for the wonderful job he did as moderator.

May all of us continue to raise our voices wherever we can, as we join in our communal prayer to end the suffering of refugee and asylum seekers.
