Br David Hawke fscBrother David Hawke, Provincial of the De La Salle Brothers of the District of Australia, has written a letter to the Prime Minister offering a property in Narooma NSW for accomodating Syrian refugees.

The full text of the letter reads:

On behalf of the De La Salle Brothers, I wish to express our delight with your government's decision to bring large numbers of Syrian refugees into our country.

As part of the Roman Catholic religious order Brothers of the Christian Schools, our District spans Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Papua New Guinea. We own and operate schools and welfare entities in Australia including, for example, BoysTown and Kids Helpline.

The Brothers own a property in Narooma NSW which we once used as a retreat/conference centre and a motel. The property is now surplus to our needs and has been on the market. With the support of my District Council, I hereby offer to make our property available for the purpose of accommodating Syrian refugees. The Brothers would not expect any rent or other income and nor would we expect to meet any setting up or running costs. I have in mind a maximum term commitment of perhaps two or three years. Of course, we would need to negotiate basic terms and conditions with the government's service provider and we would not expect to be involved in staffing or managing the facility or related services.

On a site exceeding 6,000 sq metres, the property has 45 motel rooms, a 4-bedroom manager's house, a chapel, two conference rooms, a commercial kitchen, a dining area and large open spaces. Situated on the Princes Highway, it is a 5-minute walk to Woolworths and other shops and a 10-minute walk to the local primary school, churches and the beach.

Attached are some pictures of the property and a sketch of the building layout.

I am sending copies of this letter to the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, the Premier of New South Wales and the Mayor of Eurobodalla Shire Council.

I hope we can be of assistance.

(Signed) David Hawke fsc
