Last night, Immigration Minister Scott Morrison announced that asylum seekers who have had their claims rejected and are in community detention or in detention centres had no right to be in Australia any more. These more than 1000 people will be detained and deported if they refuse to return home voluntarily.
CRA President, Sr Annette Cunliffe rsc, expressed shock and disappointment at this latest asylum seeker policy, saying, “Many of these people have no home! They are displaced persons. And the number includes women and children.”
“Again, I call to mind the words of Pope Francis”, said Sr Annette.
"The ‘other’ is no longer a brother or sister to be loved, but simply someone who disturbs my life and my comfort”, said Pope Francis. “In this globalized world, we have fallen into globalized indifference. We have become used to the suffering of others: it doesn’t affect me; it doesn’t concern me; it’s none of my business”.
“Catholic Religious Australia and numerous other organisations and individuals are deeply concerned.”
“We are ready to work with Government to ensure all people seeking asylum in Australia are treated with dignity and compassion,” said Sr Annette.
