Queensland Presentation Sister Rosemary Grundy pvbm joins other Presentation Sisters and lay associates in reaffirming their commitment to sustainable development by taking part in the Rio+20 Sustainable Development Conference in Brazil on 20-22 June 2012.

The group is representing the International Presentation Association (IPA), a network of various congregations of Presentation women working for global justice. In the Rio+20 conference, Rosemary is joined by Sister Marcela Alejandra Cruz Barrios pbvm (Chilean), Sister Elizabeth Lee pbvm (Canadian), Mary-Ann Greaney (Associate from New Zealand), Mr Tamai Mafuse (Associate from Zimbabwe) and Ms Stephanie Campbell from Australia.

They are presently participating in a number of parallel events scheduled in the days prior to and during the conference and will observe sessions of governments during the conference.

Before the event, Presentation Sisters around the world met together to reflect on major environmental issues. The International Presentation Association Submission to Rio+20 Compilation Document was prepared by Joan Power pbvm (Victoria).

You can read more about the Presentation Sisters’ policy discussions in preparation for the Rio+20 Conference here.

The Rio+20 Conference marks the 20th year since the first Earth Summit in Rio, and it aims to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges.

The Conference will focus on two themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development.

More information, updates and a live webcast can be found through the Rio+20 website.
