Earth Day 2016 PosterEarth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22, through global events that demonstrate support for environmental protection. This year, the theme is "Trees for the Earth".

On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement is scheduled to be signed by the United States, China, and some 120 other countries. The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has invited all world leaders (196 parties to the historic Paris Agreement in December 2015) to a signing ceremony on Earth day. The signing event will take place at UN Headquarters in New York on the first day the agreement will be open for signature. This signing satisfies a key requirement for the entry into force of the historic draft climate protection treaty adopted by consensus of the 195 nations present at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.

In his invitation letter, the Secretary-General said that leaders’ participation could also facilitate the early entry into force of the Paris Agreement and provides a solid foundation for the low-carbon, climate-resilient transformation of the global economy. He added: 'This transformation will help secure a future that is safer, healthier and more prosperous for all.'
