In watchfulness, longing and rebirth

Despite social injustice, advent reminds us we are people of hope, writes Sister Suzette Clark rsc.

As I reflect on this past year I am very aware that it is our first peoples and our last peoples for whom justice has been denied.

Indigenous Australians have lost their say in the running of their lives and remote Aboriginal communities show little signs of the billions spent to improve living conditions.

I wonder what would happen if the billions spent on off-shore processing was used to resettle people seeking asylum and to engage with our neighbours to establish a regional solution.

Advent reminds us that we are people of hope. It invites us to enter again into a time not unlike pregnancy – a time of watchfulness, of longing, of preparation and of waiting for that which is to be revealed, that which is to be born.

May Christ be reborn in our lives, in the lives of our loved ones, and in our world this Christmas.
