caritas logo150As you know, Caritas Australia is the international aid and development agency of the Australian Catholic Church. Caritas Australia has asked Catholic Religious Australia (CRA) to support its campaign to protect Australia’s Foreign Aid Budget.

It would seem that the government is deciding where to find savings for their mid-year budget adjustments and the aid budget is reportedly in danger of further cuts. Australia’s aid budget has undergone successive cuts since September 2013 that amount to nearly $8 billion. As well, the Federal Government has announced it will contribute $200 million to an international fund designed to help developing nations tackle climate change and that this money will be paid over four years from Australia's aid program.

Australia’s overseas aid budget provided 20% of federal budget savings in the May budget. This was the single largest source of Commonwealth savings in the budget.

At just over 1% of the federal budget, aid is only a minor part of Government spending but is a major contributor to community development and economic growth in the developing world.

Australian aid transforms millions of lives every year. Cuts to the aid program threaten life-changing development opportunities in the world’s poorest communities.

Recently, Caritas Australia issued a Media Release: pdf  Caritas Australia Urges Australians to help protect Foreign Aid (41.57 kB) .

Caritas Australia is urging us to participate in its two calls to action:

  • one minute action: sign the petition to Prime Minister Abbott, Treasurer Joe Hockey and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann
  • two minute action: phone the Ministers' offices

Caritas Australia has the petition to Treasurer Joe Hockey and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann available on its website and instructions on how to phone their offices: www.caritas.org.au/australianaid
